Wiggins Announces the First Zero-Emissions Large-Capacity Forklift: the eBull.

Oxnard, CA – Wiggins Lift Co. is excited to unveil the first commercially available zero emission large capacity forklift. With capacities ranging from 30,000 to 70,000 lbs, the Wiggins Yard eBull is fully electric and wholly manufactured in the United States. Wiggins Lift is a family-owned forklift manufacturer that has been operating in Southern California since the 1950s. The world leader in marina forklifts, Wiggins will display its first zero-emission industrial unit at the Breakbulk Americas Show in Houston on October 2-4.

Wiggins has partnered with battery supplier Thor Trucks, a fellow Southern California company, recently chosen by UPS to provide electric delivery trucks for field tests by the logistics giant. Thor provides batteries and electrification system integration, enabling Wiggins to reduce R&D effort and development time. “We’ve been innovators in the material handling field for over 50 years, so producing the first commercially available large capacity zero emission forklift in the industry was a logical next step for us,” says Micah McDowell, Wiggins’ Director of Sales.

McDowell points to the company’s previous projects, including the continued evolution of the industry-leading Marina Bull LoPRO, the crab-steering Marina FLX, the Nuclear Waste Handler, and Operating in Heavy Seas: the Wiggins LCS Forklift as evidence for Wiggins’ ability to innovate and build new vehicles from the ground up.

Wiggins is using high voltage lithium-ion batteries, which are more resilient and longer lasting than the lead-acid batteries typically used on smaller warehouse forklifts.

With an estimated 6-month lead time, Wiggins will begin taking orders at the Breakbulk Show. Due to the higher costs associated with battery electric power, Wiggins has been working with state authorities on available grants designed to ease the financial burden of customers who purchase the electric forklifts. Many states have put such programs in place to incentivize operators to adopt zero emission material handling solutions. Many predict that advances in battery technology will significantly reduce costs of batteries within the next few years. Wiggins is also working on designs for a forklift that runs on hydrogen fuel cells, the technology, and infrastructure for which it estimates will be available in the next few years. Wiggins will build all of its battery-electric Yard eBulls with the capability the convert to hydrogen power in the field when that technology is available. For now, Wiggins will offer its entire product catalog in electric, including marina and industrial forklifts, tire handlers for mining, and other all-purpose and agricultural equipment.

Wiggins Lift invites you to see this technology for yourself at the Breakbulk Americas Show in Houston on October 2-4 at Booth 1349. With the first Wiggins Yard eBull on display, Wiggins will show you the advantages of zero-emission material handling and answer any questions you may have. Wiggins looks forward to seeing you there!

A guest post from Russell Higginson, the General Manager of The Boathouse Marina in Freemantle, Western Australia.

My name is Russell Higginson, and I have been in the marine business lifting and storing boats in Fremantle, Western Australia, for 30 years.

I first used a Wiggins Marina Bull in the early 1990s and, boy, was I impressed! Because of how easy they are to use, and the peace of mind offered by the Stabilift™, system, I have been using Wiggins machines exclusively at the many marina and storage facilities that I’ve been involved with ever since!

About six years ago, I saw a CGI video on the internet of the Wiggins Marina Bull FLX. I said to myself “Wow, I want one!!” After a few meetings with owners of The Boathouse Marina in Fremantle, everyone saw the potential of this revolutionary machine. We decided that we would be the first to use it, here at our dry storage facility.

This piece of engineering brilliance was a bit daunting at first. We asked ourselves “Will it be fast enough? Is it too big? Can we get parts if needed?” But after the first month of training on the FLX, we were off and running.

Three years later and over 10,000 boats launched and retrieved, the machine has exceeded our expectations. So much so that we are purchasing another machine to keep up with our expansion. Whenever we’ve had issues, Wiggins has stood behind their product 100%, and they never fail to assist when neede—day or night.

Another major plus is that the FLX helps prevent damage to boats, whether it be the gunwale rubbing on the side of the rack or the nav lights being snapped off at the lower rack—the fact you can “rise above the top of the boat” is awesome!  Once you are lined up at the rack, there is no deviation—it traverses straight. The FLX has allowed me to cut my budget for damages to boats by as much as  95%!

It comes down to the fact that you can lift bigger boats in a smaller area. The increased stability offered by the unique amd award-winning design means that the big boats can be lifted to a top rack, middle rack, or lower rack. It doesn’t matter. We routinely lift 60 boats in an eight-hour day without a single problem.

Would I recommend the FLX? Yes, yes, and yes!

Wiggins Lift at the Breakbulk Americas Show in Houston

Breakbulk Americas Show 2017 was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas, on October 17-19. Breakbulk Americas is the largest exhibition of its kind in the Americas, bringing top-tier shippers together with breakbulk and project cargo service providers.

Exhibitors and sponsors include specialized ocean carriers, freight forwarders, ports/ terminals, logistics providers, road, rail, barge and air transportation, export packers, equipment companies and more. Hear from industry experts during the conference sessions, which are held on the exhibition floor.

Wiggins Lift shared a booth with MYMIC Technologies and XL Lifts, where our displayed showed one of the two 60k @ 48″ LC trucks delivered in 2016 to SSA Port of Stockton. These lifts had a custom rebar attachment for handling 40′ and 60′ pieces of rebar. SSA liked these trucks so much, they placed an order for two 33K @ 24″ LC forklifts.

As seen on the display above, what sets Wiggins apart from others is custom design: we can make anything you need with any attachment. Our trucks are high quality,  last longer than our competitors, and we provide short lead times (we 3-4 months, not the 8-10 months of our competitors).
